The Junior Mechanical Engineer will support various government, commercial, and internal research and development programs at Battelle. This support will likely include design, development, test, and production of complex mechanical and electromechanical systems. The person filling this position will be expected to function as part of a technical team which may be composed of engineers, technicians, and support staff. The person will perform assignments of moderate complexity by compiling and evaluating design and test data, preparing technical specifications, analyzing technical data to determine appropriate limits and variables for product, process or materials specifications. 

• Interpret, compile and analyze data collected and writes various technical reports. 

• Complete assigned project work within schedule and budget constraints. 

• Assist with proposal efforts as needed. 

• Build relationships with internal clients. 

• Contribute to IR&D studies. 

• Support business development efforts led by others. 

Major Responsibilities 

• Designing, fabricating, and integrating mechanical and electromechanical systems as part of an integrated technical team 

• Testing and troubleshooting mechanical systems 

• Reverse engineering mechanical systems 

• Generating and interpreting mechanical schematics 

• Ability to work on own or as part of a team 

• Ability to interface with clients both in defining system requirements and fielding equipment 

• Ability to generate appropriate documentation including technical manuals and procedures 

• Some travel and field work may be required 

Position Requirements 

THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION: 

• Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Ocean or Mechanical Engineering program, or an equivalent discipline. 

• Minimum 3.0 GPA 

• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook 

• Sole US citizenship with a DoD TS clearance and/or a TS/SCI with poly 

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team 

• Positive attitude and eagerness to take on technical challenges 

• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills 

• Problem solving ability and commitment to quality results under schedule deadlines 

• Ability to interface with clients both in defining system requirements and fielding equipment 

• Ability to generate appropriate documentation including technical manuals and procedures 

• Some travel and field work may be required 

THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION: 

• Experience with design, analysis, testing, and fabrication of mechanical and electro-mechanical components and systems. 

• Experience with engineering drawings, assembling or maintaining mechanical equipment, machining or other fabrication experience. 

• Experience with the operation of equipment in a maritime environment. 

• Experience in any of the following areas: robotics, sensors, underwater vehicles, energy systems, and underwater communications or acoustics 

• Additional work experience in the mechanical engineering field 

• Familiarity with mechanical engineering design tools and methods 

• Experience generating and interpreting engineering schematics 

• Experience working in a lab environment, including preparing, conducting, and documenting tests
